Teachers urged to sign up for free Advancing Access conference

The Russell Group today urged teachers to sign up for a free online virtual conference that will see representatives of the UK’s 24 leading research intensive universities offer applications advice to people working with pupils who are considering their university choices.

This is the second virtual conference to be hosted by Advancing Access, who provide targeted assistance for teachers to help ensure students with talent, potential and ability are fully informed on their higher education options.

The virtual conference will take place on the 24th May between 4pm and 7pm. Teachers will have the chance to hear first-hand from university staff from each Russell Group university about admissions processes and entry requirements.

More than one third of teachers who have used Advancing Access resources or participated in the last virtual conference said they were more likely to encourage their students to apply to a leading university as a result.

Commenting, Russell Group Head of Policy Sarah Stevens said:

“Teachers have a fundamental role to play in helping pupils decide whether higher education is for them. Their contribution is particularly important in schools with low progression to university. It is vital that staff in schools and colleges are getting accurate advice and that is what Advancing Access is all about.

“We know teachers who participated in the first Advancing Access virtual conference are more likely to encourage young people to apply to a leading university as a result. If you did not attend the last conference there is still a week left to register and ensure that you don’t miss out this time round. 

“The virtual conference is a one stop shop for advice on everything from academic references, to helping pupils with personal statements and more. If you can’t join the conference on 24 May then there is a wide range of resources on the Advancing Access website that are there to help teachers support their pupils.”
