Consultation on undergraduate medical education

Commenting on the publication of a new consultation, Russell Group Head of Policy Jessica Cole said:

"Russell Group medical schools provide students with a world class education and our members are ready to deliver the additional training places that the government has announced.

"If we want the best doctors for our NHS then decisions over where additional students will train should primarily be taken on the basis of quality. This is important for protecting the reputation of UK medical education and for patient safety.

"We value the contribution of our international students, many of whom go on to work in the NHS after they graduate.  We will need to look closely at the impact of the changes which have been suggested on the ability of the UK to remain competitive internationally."
