Research Partnership Investment Fund announcement

“The upgraded Research Partnership Investment Fund (RPIF) is a very welcome opportunity for leading universities, businesses and charities to harness the UK’s immense research capability.

“As this latest round’s winners show, Russell Group universities understand the needs of business and are laying the foundations for future research and innovation successes. 

“These exciting projects demonstrate the strength of partnerships between the UK’s leading universities and businesses, which will drive economic growth and have a wider impact through medical and other advances.

“But it is important that investment in research facilities and infrastructure is sustained in the medium and long-term so we can capture all of the benefits that come out of our first class research.

“As our global competitors – especially in Asia – pump billions into their research bases, it is increasingly vital that the Government demonstrates its commitment to maintaining the UK’s place as a global leader in science and research.”

The latest round of RPIF funding includes: 

• A £38 million partnership between the University of Manchester, The Christie hospital and Cancer Research UK to develop the Manchester Cancer Research Centre.
• An £85 million partnership between UCL (University College London) and the Great Ormond Street Hospital: the Centre for Children’s Rare Disease Research.
• A £32 million partnership between Queen's University Belfast, The Atlantic Philanthropies, a Wellcome-Wolfson Capital Award, The Sir Jules Thorn Charitable Trust and the Insight Trust for the Visually Impaired to deliver the next phase of the Institute of Health Sciences.
• A £34 million partnership between the University of Nottingham, GlaxoSmithKline and other co-investors to support the Centre in Sustainable Chemistry.
• A £150 million partnership between Imperial College London and Voreda to contribute to the development of a major new spin-out campus adjacent to the White City regeneration area.
