Sutton Trust - social mobility
12 July 2017
Commenting on a new social mobility survey from the Sutton Trust, Sarah Stevens, Head of Policy at the Russell Group, said:
“Almost half of survey respondents said that quality teaching in schools was more important to social mobility than lower university tuition fees or more grammar schools.
“Russell Group universities work closely with schools in their local community, helping to raise aspirations and support attainment-raising among pupils, particularly in deprived areas. They work with more than 2,000 schools and tens of thousands of pupils every year.
“In addition, our members are working together to target teachers in deprived areas where progression to university is low through a set on online resources - Advancing Access. An evaluation report has found teachers using these free resources reported increased confidence in their ability to help pupils through the university application process.”
