Commenting on the announcement that the number of visas available through the Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) route will increase from 1,000 to 2,000, Russell Group head of policy Sarah Stevens said:

“International staff play a vital role in delivering world-class teaching and research at UK universities.

"A post-Brexit immigration system that helps universities continue to recruit the best global talent to the UK is essential to the future success of our higher education system. This extension of the Tier 1 exceptional talent route sends the right message and is a step in the right direction.”
