President and Vice-Chancellor, University of Southampton

Mark has been President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton since October 2019. Before this, he was Vice-Chancellor at Lancaster University for just under eight years.
Throughout his academic career, Mark has published more than 380 papers about advanced magnetic resonance techniques, helping to understand a range of problems in the field of materials physics.
Mark has held several external appointments including Senior Independent Member of UKRI EPSRC’s Council; board member of the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales, chairing its Research Wales Committee, Chair of the Higher Education Careers Services Unit (HECSU), trustee of Jisc and Trustee of HESA. He is currently Chair of the Board of Advance HE and A member of UKRI Research England Council.
He was awarded a CBE for Services to Research and Higher Education in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours.
