Northern Accelerator is an innovative collaboration between Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland, Teesside and York universities to commercialise research and boost the region’s economy.

By connecting academics with business leaders and providing funding and business support, Northern Accelerator is transforming the rate that research is translated into commercial opportunities.

The project is forming sustainable businesses and creating jobs: to date it has created 47 businesses and over 650 people are employed in partners’ spin-offs.

Northern Accelerator helps founding academics create R&D intensive, high potential spinouts in the North East and North Yorkshire, realising social and environmental impact from research, and helping create more and better jobs. The programme supports technology transfer through a combination of training, funding, networking and executive leadership, the programme has significantly boosted the rate of commercialisation of academic research.

Businesses backed by the Northern Accelerator include Nevrargenics Limited, a Durham University spinout which is conducting clinical trial into new treatments for Motor Neurone Disease.

Other Northern Accelerator spinouts include, METzero Technologies, a Newcastle University-supported spinout which is part of a new project aiming to reduce energy needs and carbon footprint in wastewater treatment.
