LERU economic impact

01 December 2017

Commenting on the publication of a new economic impact report from the League of European Research-Intensive Universities., Russell Group head of policy Jessica Cole said:

“This report confirms research-intensive universities have a huge economic role to play that extends well beyond the classroom. Investing in higher education is good for students, good for jobs and the economy as a whole.

“Research carried out at Russell Group universities in 2015/16 will add £34.1 billion to the UK economy. Collaborations with partners across Europe have been fundamental to the success of our higher education sector. The same will be true for research-intensive institutions in other parts of the EU.

“Partnerships across international borders underpin the jobs and economic growth this report identifies. That is why it is so important we reach a good Brexit deal on research that allows joint working to continue. This is something policy makers in the UK and in capitals across the continent need to keep in mind as discussions over Brexit and the future of EU framework programmes continue.”
