Research investment

20 November 2017

Commenting on the announcement of an increase in research and development investment, chair of the Russell Group Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli said:

“Research carried out at Russell Group universities in 2015/16 will add £34.1bn to the UK economy. Whether we are talking about basic research or applied work, investment in science will pay for itself many times over and support high-value jobs across the economy.

“In the UK we punch above our weight in science, but historically we have invested a lower share of national income in research and development than some of our international competitors. This announcement of additional new funding ahead of the budget is a welcome statement of intent from the government.”
