Russell Group response to new UKRI strategy

Commenting on the publication of Transforming Tomorrow Together, a new five-year strategy for UKRI, Russell Group Head of Policy (Research and International) Stephanie Smith said:

"This new strategy is an important step for UKRI that lays the foundations for the future success of UK R&D, ensuring university research will continue to deliver for the economy and communities around the country.

"There is much to be welcomed here. Recognition of the importance of the dual support system and the clear ambition to tackle financial sustainability challenges are big positives, as are commitments on broadening and diversifying career pathways, boosting international partnerships and improving research culture.

"As with every strategy, the challenge now will be implementation. We need to see how ongoing reviews into research bureaucracy, the REF and the Grant review of UKRI will help the organisation meet these ambitious targets, and detailed budget allocations that will support sustained progress towards the goals set out here."
