Commenting on the appointment of Sir Mark Walport as the first Chief Executive of UKRI, Acting Director of the Russell Group Dr Tim Bradshaw said:

Professor Sir Mark Walport is respected as an advocate for fundamental science and research. The appointment of someone of his stature and experience to this new role is welcome and we look forward to working closely with him over the coming months.

The UK has a highly efficient research ecosystem with the dual funding system delivering growth, jobs and innovation for the UK.  Our universities are world leaders in science and innovation and UKRI will have a key role in sustaining this position for the long-term future.
