The University of Leeds was founded in 1904, but the university's origins go back to the 19th century with the founding of the Leeds School of Medicine in 1831 and the Yorkshire College of Science in 1874. 

Both institutions welcomed local students of all faiths, backgrounds and genders. This inclusivity and commitment to the region are principles upheld to this day.
