The University of Oxford is the oldest university in the English-speaking world, dating back to the 12th century. It is world-famous for research and teaching excellence and has been ranked number 1 in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings since 2017.
There are more than 26,000 students at the University, including 12,470 undergraduates and 13,920 postgraduates. Oxford’s students come from more than 160 countries and territories and international students make up 46% of its student body. Almost 80% of undergraduates at Oxford are from the UK; over 67% of these students come from state schools and 23% come from the least advantaged backgrounds.
At the heart of Oxford’s distinctive educational offer is its collegiate system. Made up of more than 30 colleges, this provides students and academics with the benefits of belonging both to a large, internationally renowned institution and to a small interdisciplinary academic community.
The university is a catalyst for prosperity in Oxfordshire and the United Kingdom, contributing £15.7 billion to the UK economy in 2018/19, and supports more than 28,000 full time jobs. The University's research activity engages over 2,000 academics, more than 5,000 research staff and over 7,300 postgraduate research students. They are at the forefront of the latest breakthroughs to develop innovative, scalable solutions that will transform global health, climate action, energy supply and sustainability.
