Submission to the Education Select Committee Inquiry on the Impacts of Covid-19 on Education
28 May 2020
The Russell Group welcomed an opportunity to contribute to the Education Select Committee's inquiry on the effects of the Covid-19 crisis on education. Our submission emphasises the leading role universities are playing in the fight against Covid-19 through groundbreaking research, collaboration and innovative responses such as ventilator and PPE manufacturing, in the context of the their important economic and societal role.
In this context, the document covers issues such as:
- the disproportionate risk to vulnerable and disadvantaged groups, and examples of what our universities are doing to mitigate that risk, such as providing specialised support online and offline
- financial implications for universities given the potential reduction in international student fee income, funding from charities, business and the public
- solutions to issues such as accommodation for students and job retention for staff
