Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Bill clears parliamentary scrutiny
11 May 2023
After the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Bill cleared parliamentary scrutiny, Dr Tim Bradshaw, Chief Executive of the Russell Group, said:
"Universities have and always will be places where academic freedom and freedom of expression are championed. Our members work hard to create an environment where young people can be exposed to a wide range of ideas and perspectives.
"Whilst we have practical concerns over elements of the legislation, these do not take away from the determination of our universities to continue facilitating free and frank intellectual exchanges.
"The Russell Group and its member universities are ready to work with the Office for Students and the new Director for Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom to discuss guidance and other issues related to implementation of this new law."
