Home Secretary's speech on immigration
12 December 2012
Commenting on the Home Secretary’s speech on immigration today Dr Wendy Piatt, Director General of the Russell Group, said:
“We are pleased that the Home Secretary has confirmed there is no cap on the number of university students and no current plans to introduce a cap.
“Legitimate international students contribute hugely to the academic strength of our universities and are worth at least £7.9 billion to the UK each year from their tuition fees and living expenditure alone. More than £2.5 billion of this vital contribution is generated by Russell Group universities.
“It is welcome news that PhD graduates will be able to stay on for 12 months after they have finished their studies to find skilled work or set up as an entrepreneur. These students are some of the very brightest in the world who have spent years acquiring valuable qualifications and skills which we need for growth.
“Our universities’ world-class teaching and research is a major draw for top talent. Ministers can also play a vital role by continuing to send the message that the UK is open to the brightest and the best international students and academics.”
