Russell Group writes to UKRI
18 March 2020
Tim Bradshaw, Chief Executive of the Russell Group, today wrote to UKRI asking for support to protect the UK’s research workforce from the disruption caused by the response to the COVID-19 virus threat.
Russell Group universities are absolutely committed to national efforts to address the threat posed by the COVID-19 virus, and have moved swiftly to prioritise activity in support of Government efforts, even as other vital research activity has been disrupted. The situation may continue for many months, and is likely to severely disruptive to the careers and training of the people who underpin the UK’s research base.
Given the importance of research talent to the UK’s ambitions for future growth and prosperity, the Russell Group proposes an emergency fund be launched by UKRI to cover the salaries of staff, stipends and other research costs during this period.
