Levelling up the North West
28 September 2021
The North West is home to the University of Liverpool and the University of Manchester. Between 2014 and 2020, more than 8,600 new jobs were created by spinouts linked to Russell Group universities in the North West. Those 1,672 active companies had a combined turnover of £171m and brought £221m of investment to the region.
In addition to the high value jobs created by their business spin-out activities, Russell Group universities in the North West currently employ around 18,000 staff, an increase of 13% over the last 5 years.
How universities are helping in the region
University of Liverpool – driving digital innovation
A programme led by the University of Liverpool's Virtual Engineering Centre provided local small and medium enterprises with advice on how to accelerate the use of new technologies - helping to boost productivity and job creation.
Alongside our other strengths in materials discovery, personalised health, heritage, digital, ageing, and climate, the prosperity of our region is intimately entwined with the growth of our collective research power.
— Professor Dame Janet Beer, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Liverpool
University of Manchester – delivering a cutting-edge innovation district
The University of Manchester will develop a new £1.5bn innovation district in the city to help create new firms and attract new investment to the region. The scheme is projected to support up to 10,000 new high quality jobs and add millions to the local economy.
