Russell Group response to a deal with the EU
28 December 2020
Following confirmation of a deal with the European Union, the Russell Group's Chief Executive, Dr Tim Bradshaw, has issued a statement on behalf of our 24 members:
Dr Tim Bradshaw, CEO of the Russell Group, said:
“The Russell Group welcomes the news of a UK-EU deal and the certainty that now gives our members, staff and students and international partners. This agreement provides a good basis for a strong ongoing relationship with the EU, facilitating collaboration with our nearest neighbours. At the same time, we look forward to the opportunity of trade deals and research partnerships beyond Europe. Our world-leading universities have a strong role to play in delivering a truly Global Britain.
“Collaboration is at the heart of research and innovation so we are pleased an agreement was reached on the UK’s ongoing participation in the Horizon programme which has delivered many benefits for all sides. Looking ahead, we believe international partnerships like this will help the UK build a greener recovery and healthier society and we stand ready to work with the Government in building more of them. The new Turing Scheme, which replaces the UK’s participation in Erasmus+, is also an important development and we hope will ensure British students continue to benefit from the opportunities that studying abroad provides.
“This trade agreement marks a major milestone for the UK and Europe. Our universities are focused on embracing the opportunities of a post-Brexit, post-Covid world where higher education, research and innovation – fields where Britain leads the world - are at the forefront of building back better.”
