Welcome appointments for science and research

There were welcome appointments for science and research in the UK, with Professor Dame Ottoline Leyser, director of the Sainsbury Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, appointed as CEO of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), and Professor Sir Adrian Smith confirmed as President Elect of the Royal Society. Dame Ottoline will take over from Sir Mark Walport at the end of June, while Sir Adrian will take up his post in November 2020. Commenting, Dr. Tim Bradshaw, Chief Executive of the Russell Group, said:

“I am delighted to see the appointments of Dame Ottoline and Sir Adrian to their new posts at UKRI and the Royal Society respectively. Both are highly-respected figures and will bring a wealth of expertise and experience to their roles at a crucial time for UK science and research. I look forward to working with them closely to protect and grow the UK’s world leading research base, which will be at the heart of our recovery from the current crisis, and key to meeting future global challenges.”
