Labour student loan reform proposals

02 June 2023

Commenting on Labour proposals for reforms to student loan repayments, Russell Group Policy Manager Lily Bull said:

“The cost-of-living crisis is putting students and graduates under real pressure. Russell Group universities have made major increases to hardship funding and other support to help students ensure they can focus on their studies and we’ve called on government to review maintenance loans in England so they keep up with inflation.

“It’s right we consider reforms with the potential to put money back in the pockets of young people to help meet financial pressures and it’s important this is part of a funding system which supports high quality education, student choice and is fair and affordable for students and the taxpayer. Universities are helping students from all backgrounds get the skills they need to build a successful career and providing the UK with the people we need to drive economic growth and boost productivity.”
