Russell Group response to UCAS January 2023 deadline application data

09 February 2023

In response to the publication of UCAS application data for the 2023 cycle January Equal Consideration Deadline, Dr Hollie Chandler, Head of Policy (Higher Education) at the Russell Group said:

"We are pleased to see demand for high-quality higher education remains strong, with applications to higher tariff universities similar to last year and significantly up on the pre-pandemic trend.

"While falls in applications to medical and teaching courses are concerning, in part this is likely to reflect an adjustment back from pandemic years and overall demand remains strong. Given how vital medical courses are for our future NHS workforce, we would encourage the Government to consider a funded expansion of the medical and dental training places and placements available to students.

"The growth in international students shows the UK continues to be one of the best places in the world to study. Increasing demand from students from countries like India and Nigeria – prioritised in the Government’s International Education Strategy – indicate reforms such as the Graduate Route are starting to pay off."
