Russell Group response to UUK Taskforce on Efficiency and Transformation

19 December 2024

In response to further details announced by Universities UK (UUK) on its Taskforce on Efficiency and Transformation in Higher Education, Dr Hollie Chandler, Director of Policy at the Russell Group, said:

"As costs have risen in recent years, our universities have worked to review their efficiency and reduce costs to ensure they can continue to deliver excellent research and teaching. This includes working in partnership with other institutions to explore ways to drive down costs. Our universities look forward to working with the new Taskforce on Efficiency and Transformation to consider how the sector can work together at a regional and national level to build on this and deliver transformation and further cost savings.

"Alongside important work to reduce costs, we also need to achieve a sustainable system for funding higher education that is fair for students, universities and taxpayers in the long term. This will be critical to supporting the pipeline of skills and new discoveries required to drive innovation, improve the UK’s public services, and boost economic growth."

Recognising these challenges, researchers at the University of Edinburgh have shown the benefits of reducing the use of blood transfusions in intensive care and surgery.
