Submission to the BEIS committee inquiry on post-pandemic economic growth

27 July 2020

The Government's post-pandemic growth inquiry is looking at how to grow and level-up the UK economy in the wake of Covid-19. As employment hubs in every region of the UK with an emphasis on research and skills, Russell Group universities are well placed to take a leading role.

Our submission:

  • underlines the importance of R&D for the UK's recovery
  • links funding through teaching grants to the UK's pipeline of skilled talent that will drive future growth and keep the economy running
  • looks at short-term and long-term measures to maintain research during Covid-19
  • outlines opportunities to address long-standing issues that could unleash more research and productivity throughout the UK
  • recommends our universities as trusted regional hubs through which to channel community investment and help level up the economy
  • suggests how the Government can help maintain the Russell Group's leading position in training, recruiting and retaining talented graduates from home and abroad
  • underlines our support for a UK ARPA
  • underlines our support for Horizon association or alternatively, new frameworks for research funding
  • highlights our universities' role in culture, mental health and wellbeing
