Response to OfS consultation on additional 2020/21 recurrent and capital funding

11 November 2020

The Russell Group has responded to a consultation by the Office for Students (OfS) on how it should distribute additional money from the Department for Education to support the increase in student numbers in this year's cohort.

The paper emphasises that while the £20m additional funding will alleviate pressure on universities given the extra number of students, the 12% increase in the number of students at high tariff universities means that the deficit between what it costs to teach – particularly lab-based classes for the next generation of doctors, scientists and engineers – and the funding delivered, is likely to widen. It is important that students in this year's larger cohort are supported throughout the entirety of their degrees, beyond just their first year.
